All About Nina Flowers

kbs_94321LOCA! This queen may have looked fierce every time she stepped out onto the runway but as we soon discovered, she has a heart of gold. The only queen from Season 1 not to have been in the bottom two lip syncing for her life and the first to ever enjoy a legendary tic-tac lunch with Mama Ru (in my eyes, the true winner of the first season of the best show in the world). Prepare yourself for the fabulousness that is Miss Nina Flowers!

Nina Flowers provided us with so many incredible moments in Season 1 – from nailing the carwash photoshoot and winning the very first challenge, to vogueing it out on the runway and (rightfully) winning Miss Congeniality later on in the season. Aside from being an absolute sweetheart that the other queens could only ever say good things about, Nina’s sense of humour was top notch. Instead of crumbling when things went a little wonky, Nina knew how to laugh at herself. For example, during the teleprompter challenge, Nina ever so sweetly read out “This is your name, good night”… instantly cracking up as she realised what she had said. Another stellar example of her vibrant sense of humour was during the mini challenge with the female fighters in the makeover episode. After straddling the punchbag and showing it who was boss, doing a move that they called the “ground and pound”, Nina shouted “Don’t talk back to my face bitch!” at the punchbag. I’m in stitches every time I see that scene!

kbs_9596-x3-427x640During the MAC Viva Glam episode, Nina revealed that recording the message would be a challenge as she thinks in Spanish and sometimes doesn’t know how to translate some words. In my opinion, she had nothing to worry about – she looked fierce and got the message across perfectly. What I also thought was really lovely and showed off her beautiful character, was that as she left the set she thanked the two models (later to be known as the Pit Crew), which the other queens did not. In the voiceover, as she pummelled the runway in her iconic feathered cuffs, she said “If I like what I see, it doesn’t matter what anybody else has to say… because I feel good about myself ”. This should be the mantra in everyone’s life!

One of my favourite episodes was the Absolut Vodka one where Nina transformed herself into Miss Mango. Having to prepare three looks that week (swimsuit, executive realness and an eleganza evening gown), Ru asked Nina during the walkthrough who she’d be drawing inspiration from for her executive realness look. “I’m basing the executive woman in the image of my mom… She was not only my mom, she was my best friend. She always encouraged me to go for the things I wanted in life”.

nina-flowers2Nina may have dedicated herself to the art of female impersonation for over 20 years, but she is also an incredibly talented DJ. You can tell Nina has rhythm flowing through her veins after she nailed the choreography for RuPaul’s music video, Cover Girl. During the iconic lunch with Ru, she told Nina “You’re a legendary queen and I cannot tell you how happy I am to have you here”.

I’m overjoyed to reveal that I had the pleasure and privilege to interview Miss Nina… something I feel deeply honoured to have done. Read on for her fabulous answers!

Chloe: What made you audition for RuPaul’s Drag Race?
Nina: I had recently moved to Denver, Colorado, and I was still looking for work, so it was an opportunity considering my schedule was flexible. A friend of mine from Puerto Rico told me about an online competition for Drag Queens to appear on a reality TV show. Drag performers on TV – never heard of it, so I was happy to fill out a profile.

Chloe: If you were to be cast in Season 9, who would you play in Snatch Game and why?Nina: Cyndi Lauper, she has always been one of my biggest inspirations. In fact, she was my #1 choice for All Stars, but at the very last minute I changed everything. I really thought it would be interesting to bring some of my Latin culture into the show, plus I wanted to challenge myself, so chose La Lupe.

f32e0d21e2bd2a6a73ced1785fb8706bChloe: Who or what inspires Nina’s incredible style?
Nina: I’m a child of the 80s. While my name was inspired by one of my all time favourite punk rocker artists, Nina Hagen, she has also inspired many of my looks. I’m also inspired by artists such as Boy George, Cyndi Lauper and Annie Lennox, to name a few.

Chloe: What’s your favourite song at the moment?
Nina: I’m very particular about my music…kind of like my drag. I don’t listen to radio that much. I like stuff that is very progressive and raw. My favourite at the moment is Isaac Escalante & Xavier Santos feat Alan T – Like A Man (Original Mix).  It’s super hot!!

Chloe: If you were to get stuck in a lift (elevator), which celebrity would you want to be in there with (past or present) and why?
Nina: In a situation like that I would want to be stranded with someone incredibly funny so that they would make me forget I’m stuck in an elevator. I would love to go through that with the mother of punk rock, and as I mentioned previously my #1 of all times, Nina Hagen. She is hysterical and the bitch can sing! So I’m sure she’d be making jokes and singing in that elevator…lol

Chloe: If you could have any magical power, what would it be and why?
Nina: Make everyone smile. Things are so different when people smile at you. A smile makes everything feel right, makes everyone feel like they belong. A smile is so powerful – it can wash away all your insecurities. Smiling is priceless.

i8fbqyeChloe: Have you visited the UK before and if so, what’s your favourite thing about it?
Nina: Yes, I visited about two years ago. I loved it – the people, the architecture, the culture… everything. I had the pleasure of performing at West 5 Bar, in London; The Village Inn in Birmingham, and Cheerz in Aberdeen. Now I look forward to visiting again, but this time for my music.

I just want to say a huge thank you to Nina for taking the time out of her busy schedule to answer my questions – it will forever be appreciated. I hope to see you perform and/or DJ one day, whether that be here in London or over in the U.S. Stay fiercely fabulous!

My 2014 blogging in review!

Happy first Monday of 2015 everyone!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a cool little 2014 annual report for my blog – I found it super interesting, especially since its my first year of blogging!

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,500 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 42 trips to carry that many people.

Withdrawal symptoms

Happy 2015 everyone!

So, even though it’s only been a few days since I completed WordPress’ 365 Days of Writing Prompts challenge, I must admit I have felt somewhat lost. Not having a daily task to look forward to or knowing that I wasn’t part of a community that spanned the entire globe since finishing. I just can’t figure out what sort of blogging challenge to take up next… photography, event biography or even reviews. I just hope that I decide fairly soonish, before 2015 runs out!

A brand new you, effective tomorrow!

#365: Tomorrow is the first day of a brand new year. Tomorrow you get to become anyone in the world that you wish. Who are you? If you decide to stay “you” share your rationale.

I’d still be me – just a healthier, non-ill version! I look forward to the simple things, like eating normal food once again and more than anything, I’ve just realised I’m really looking forward to deciding what I’ll do with my blog for 2015! So far, I’m thinking one of the following:
– taking up a photography challenge;
– writing about the events and opportunities my career takes me to;
– turning it into a bucket list blog;
– writing regular reviews on my favourite things (films, games, restaurants etc).

It would be great to hear from my fellow bloggers on their thoughts or any other ideas.

Thanks to everyone in the blogging community for welcoming me into this incredible world and showing me such overwhelming support – you’ve made 2014 fabulous!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Best way to end the year!

Wooooohoooooo! I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has followed and supported me over these last 12 months – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience and am overwhelming happy to have reached 200 followers! With only fifteen days left of 2014, I guess I should really start thinking about what challenge to accept for 2015… all suggestions very much encouraged.

Thanks once again you wonderful bloggers for making me feel so welcome!

Ebb and flow

#271: Our blogs morph over time, as interests shift and life happens. Write a post for your blog — but three years in the future.

Day #1366: 28th September 2017

Another entertaining journey home…

So I boarded the train on the second carriage (as the first one was crammed with the usual Friday night loud-mouth drunks) and sat down, only to sit opposite a blurry eyed gentleman, who had his feet up on the chair, drinking some cheap lager out of a can. Great! He also had his backpack on the seat next to him, which proved awkward when a bearded 30ish-year-old approached the seat. “Do you want to sit here mate?”, said the clearly tipsy Irishmen in a semi-aggressive manner. “Yeah”, the bearded man replied cautiously. “Well, I’m not a *expletive* mind reader!”. Oh dear… what have I let myself in for. Do I risk moving and creating a scene, or do I wait it out?! It’s only a 30 minute journey, what’s the worst that could happen.

That’s when a revolting daddy long legs started to dive bomb me… I was unable to hide my insane dislike for those things and it hadn’t gone unnoticed. So, the Irish guy tried catching it in order to put it out the window – only to accidentally pull its leg off! But it broke the ice as the Irish guy then began mocking the newly seated guys beard… Luckily for everyone, he was a pretty mellow man and didn’t take the slightest bit of offence. That’s when our conversation began – we discussed beards (obviously), nights out in the areas we lived in and, well, more about beards. But it just goes to show that initial impressions aren’t all they seem…

* FYI – this journey did actually take place, including everything in it. I always seem to have eventful train journeys home after nights out (and these all take place before midnight!), and my close friend mentioned that I should begin documenting it. So it would be nice if this actually took off and people enjoyed reading about them. Let me know what you think!

Secret of success

#237: What would it take for you to consider yourself a “successful blogger”? Is that something you strive for?

In all honesty, it’s not something I strive for but it would be nice if I became one. I simply began this blog to improve my writing and of course, to be a part of a community that supports one another in their mutual interests. Plus, not forgetting, that the challenge intrigued me as at times I can be quite the procrastinator, so saw this as the ultimate test – could I possibly stick to something for 365 days in a row? I mean, I have breakfast every morning but that’s not a habit… it’s part of staying alive, so could I stretch myself further? Really put my mind to it and give it my all?

I’ll let my fellow bloggers be the judges of that 🙂

Viral

#234: The New York Times is going to feature your blog on its home page, and you’ve been asked to publish a new post — it’ll be the first thing tens of thousands of new readers see. Write it.

What an overwhelming honour. I quite honestly wouldn’t have a clue where to start… This prompt is going to take longer than a day to write. Any content suggestions my fellow bloggers?

Goals

#141: When you started your blog, did you set any goals? Have you achieved them? Have they changed at all?

To be quite honest, I didn’t set any goals when I started this (my first) blog! I simply wanted to create it as a method of improving my writing ability – it was to be a bonus if anyone liked it enough to follow it. All I can say, is thank goodness people have! It has given me such a confidence boost to see my stats increase day by day, through views and the occasional (much appreciated) comment 😀 I could never thank my followers enough for the support they have shown me!

I guess, when I think about it, the only goal I set in relation to this blog, was to complete 365 Days of Writing Prompts challenge without missing a single day. So far, so good! Fair enough, I have substituted some of the prompts with my own rebellious content but I have still published a post every single day, since the 1st January and I don’t plan on finishing until 31st December!

Fill in the blank

#132: Three people walk into a bar . . .

I was going to fill in the blank with the typically expected ‘ouch’ ending, but thought since three people did it at the same time, they’d have to be incredibly stupid or just insanely unlucky! Instead, I’m going to say that these three people walked into a bar, after having won £5,000,000 in a lottery syndicate, and they secretly paid for everyones dinner/drinks for the rest of the evening. They didn’t admit ownership or seek any thanks, they just wanted to do something nice for others, even if it was only a meal!
